Paul Alexander Biography

Paul Alexander is a classical concert and multicultural music composer, orchestrator, multimedia producer, music researcher, and music educator living in Vancouver, British Columbia. Paul composes classical concert music (solo, chamber and orchestral music), music for multicultural dance production (in particular for South Indian dancer Sudnya Naik), and music for the field of multicultural music education. His concert music have been played by orchestras and chamber music groups in Europe (Vienna, Mainz, Trondheim, Krakow), Canada (Toronto and Vancouver), the United States, Cuba and Africa including the Borealis String Quartet (in particular the memorable 2015 world premier of Remembering Steel Raining Tears and other work), Cuban influenced string orchestra music for the String Orchestra of New York City (SONYC), dance inspired Afro-Cuban and jazz influenced music for the the Ontario Pops Orchestra, and Afro-Cuban inspired music for the Roldan Orchestra, Havana. 

 

His musical style encompasses Western classical music with broad, yet quite direct influences from African music, Indian music, Klezmer music, as well as Cuban and South American sources. Current work in development includes a new revision of the complete Remembering Steel Skies Raining Tears string quartet and quintet; a just completed concerto for violin and orchestra entitles Gaia(Sisu!3) written for Canadian violin soloist Patricia Shih which is thematically based on the spiritual challenges presented by our contemporary environmental crisis; and new chamber and orchestral works based on the themes of re-wilding and species extinction that will make use of the specialized instruments that have been developed in many cultures around the world that imitate the sounds of animals and nature.
